As a cold front moves southeast and collides with the remnants of Tropical Storm Sara, millions of Americans will experience subnormal, freezing temperatures for the first time this fall. Over the next 72 hours, temperatures will fall more than 8°F below historical November normals in 87 major cities, affecting more than five million people.

While daily lows usually stay above freezing in Northwest Arkansas and the North Carolina Central Coastal Plain in November, temperatures in cities like Fayetteville and Rogers in Arkansas and Greenville and Jacksonville in North Carolina are forecast to fall below 32°F over the weekend. But the most abnormally cold weather will be in Central Florida, where temperatures are projected to dip more than 10°F below historical normals. A closer look at the data reveals the major cities where temperatures will be abnormally low for the next three days..

To determine the cities where it will be abnormally cold this weekend, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed raster data on minimum air temperature forecasts for the next three days from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database. Cities were ranked based on the difference between the minimum forecast overnight temperature for November 22 to 24, 2024 and historical average monthly minimum temperatures for November in the years 1901 to 2000. Data on historical climate normals for November 1901 to 2000 are from the NOAA and are at the county level. Only the largest city in each county was considered. Population data are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and are five-year estimates for 2022.
