Summer heat is intensifying across the West and Southwest this week, with millions of Americans facing triple-digit temperatures as July begins. Extreme heat will blanket metro areas from California Central Valley to the suburbs of Phoenix and Las Vegas, raising heat risk to unhealthy levels for dozens of communities.

The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings and advisories for large swaths of Arizona, Nevada, and California. In 15 cities with at least 200,000 residents, temperatures will top 100°F for several days in a row. The prolonged heat wave could increase risk of heat-related illness, particularly for vulnerable populations. A closer look at the data reveals the major cities facing triple-digit temperatures this week.

To determine the cities where it will be over 100°F this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed daily high temperature forecasts from the National Digital Forecast Database of the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on average forecast maximum temperatures from June 30 to July 2, 2025. Supplemental data on heat risk classifications are based on data from the National Weather Service’s HeatRisk tool. Only cities with at least 200,000 residents were considered.
