Heavy Rainfall Causing Flooding That Could Last for Weeks in These Places

Last month, a 1-in-1,000-year rain event devastated the South and Midwest, unleashing torrential rains and damaging winds that led to widespread flooding and claimed at least 24 lives. Weeks later, the situation has worsened as a new wave of heavy precipitation has reignited flood threats across the region.

Over the past week, a slow-moving storm system has brought additional rainfall to already saturated areas. Cities from Texas to the Carolinas have experienced renewed flooding, with some regions receiving over eight inches of rain in a single day. In Westernport, Maryland, flash floods forced the evacuation of an elementary school as waters reached the second floor. Similarly, parts of Louisiana and the Southeast are bracing for up to a foot of rain, exacerbating conditions in communities still recovering from April's deluge. A look at data from the NOAA’s Office of Water Prediction reveals which places face the greatest flooding threat this week.

To determine the cities where flooding will be worst this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on flood inundation from the NOAA’s Office of Water Prediction. Waterbody monitoring stations were ranked based on the difference between forecast water levels through May 16, 2025 and defined flooding thresholds. Data on current flooding are based on observations for May 13, 2025. Waterbody monitoring stations were matched to cities using Census Bureau boundary definitions.
