After a long winter plagued by frequent blasts of strong, Arctic winds, the polar vortex has largely subsided. March temperatures were above normal in most of the country, and millions of Americans experienced their first 70-degree day of the year in the first week of April.

But with remnants of the polar vortex meandering above Northern Europe, can Americans put away their winter jackets for good? The NOAA predicts near normal April temperatures for a majority of the country, with some parts of the South set to experience temperatures far above normal. April rain is set to deviate from historic climate normals, with drought forecast for the West and heavier-than-normal precipitation in the Midwest. A closer look at the data reveals what the rest of April will look like across the country.

To determine what the rest of April will look like across the country, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on temperature and precipitation outlooks from the NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. Data is organized by megaregion, a grouping of counties defined by the Regional Planning Association. The probability of temperature or precipitation being above or below normal are based on 30-year climate normals for the period 1991 to 2020.
