Last week, a once-in-a-generation snowstorm barreled through the Gulf Coast region, causing hundreds of miles of highway closures, thousands of flight delays, and at least 10 deaths in states spanning from Texas to Florida. The bizarre blizzard brought rare snowfall to beachside towns unaccustomed to severe winter weather, and shattered prior snow records in dozens of coastal areas.

Buried! The 25 Snowiest Days in US History

While weather reports are still piling in, at least 90 municipalities have reported one-day snowfall totals that exceed prior records. In Florida cities like Pensacola and Crestview, the past week’s snowfall beat records set 70 years ago by more than six inches. One of the first major weather events of 2025, the historic storm is a reminder that global warming can amplify both extreme heat events and extreme cold.

To determine the cities that set snowfall records this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on recent snowfall reports from the NOAA’s National Weather Service and historic snowfall extremes from the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. Cities were ranked based on the difference between recent reports of 24-hour snowfall and historic one-day snowfall records. Only cities that set one-day snowfall records this past week were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
