More than half of Florida is currently under hurricane watch, flood warning, or storm surge warning. As of Tuesday, there are nine counties in Florida under mandatory evacuation orders, with many more under voluntary evacuation instructions. Hillsborough County issued a mandatory evacuation order on Monday, with Tampa, the county seat, facing a forecasted storm surge of 10 to 15 feet. A closer look at Milton’s projected path reveals a list of major cities at risk of severe, historic damage.

To determine the major cities in Hurricane Milton’s path, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on hurricane advisory tracks from the National Hurricane Center of the NOAA. Cities, towns, and Census-designated places overlapping with Milton’s projected path as of October 8, 2024 were ranked based on total population. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau and is for 2022. Data on five-day precipitation forecasts for October 8 through October 13 are from the Quantitative Precipitation and Excessive Rainfall program of the National Weather Service. Estimated arrival times of tropical storm-force winds are based on spatial data from the NHC and are weighted by distance.
