New York, Philadelphia & 23 Other Cities Facing an Extreme Flood Threat This Weekend

The National Weather Service issued flash flood watches in 69 counties, covering more than nine million Americans.
Some of the largest cities face the greatest flood threat. New York City is forecast to receive 1.7 inches of rain over the next 72 hours, prompting New York Governor Kathy Hochul to declare a State of Emergency. Some 46 counties are forecast to receive more than two inches of rain, representing more than six million people. To determine the cities facing the greatest flood threat this weekend, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on weather forecasts from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database. Cities under current flood watches, flood warnings, and flood advisories from the National Weather Service were ranked on cumulative forecast rainfall from August 1 to 3, 2025. Only cities with at least 50,000 residents were considered.
