Floodwaters recently claimed the lives of three people in a small New Mexico town, while the death toll in the Central Texas floods just hit 134 as search efforts continue.

This week, another round of extreme rainfall is raising the risk of flash floods in several flood-prone regions across the country. There are currently 218 counties under flood watch from the National Weather Service, representing more than 36 million Americans. Several major cities are forecast to receive more than an inch of rain in just 72 hours, with one major city set to receive more than four inches of precipitation. A closer look at the data reveals the cities where extreme rainfall will cause the greatest flood risk this week.
To determine the cities where extreme rainfall is raising the risk of flooding, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on quantitative precipitation forecasts from the National Digital Forecast Database of the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on total forecast cumulative rainfall for the period July 17 to July 19, 2025. Only cities with at least 50,000 residents under a current flood watch from the NWS were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
