At some metropolitan weather monitoring stations, temperatures hit 100°F for the first time in over a decade, with dozens of smaller cities shattering local heat records.

In some parts of the country, however, residents endure 100°F heat for nearly a third of the year. In several cities in Arizona and California, temperatures regularly hit 100°F for more than three continuous months – more than 100 days in a row. And while temperatures are highest in the Southwest, triple-digit heat regularly occurs in cities as far north as Idaho and as far east as Austin, Texas. A closer look at the data reveals the cities where temperatures hit 100°F the most often.
To determine the 16 cities where it is more than 100°F for more than 100 days a year, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed historical station-level data from the NOAA’s Global Historical Climatology Network program. Stations were ranked based on the number of days where the average daily maximum exceeded 100°F from 2006 to 2020. Stations were matched to places using Census Bureau boundaries and nearest neighbor analysis in QGIS. Only cities with at least 25,000 residents were considered.
