Over the weekend, cold air blew across the Great Lakes, gathering moisture from the warm water and blanketing parts of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York with several feet of snow. The lake-effect snowstorm conditions will continue this week, dumping more than a foot of additional snow in dozens of cities throughout the Midwest and Northeast.

Major cities like Erie, Pennsylvania and Buffalo, New York could see more than two feet of additional snowfall. Some cities are forecast to set daily snowfall records. A look at NOAA data reveals the cities forecast to get the most snow this week.

To determine the cities that will get the most snowfall this Thanksgiving, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on cumulative snowfall forecasts from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database. Cities with at least 25,000 residents were ranked based on the total amount of snowfall forecast to accumulate in the 72 hours from November 26 to November 28, 2024. Supplemental data on forecast average air temperature are based on raster data from the NDFD, while data on historical monthly temperature normals for November are from the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.
