Last month, 187 counties – representing 6.3% of the U.S. population – experienced their hottest Septembers on record. Of those counties, 13 broke records that were set just the year prior.

As climate change heats the planet, cities and counties will continue to break records at an increasingly astonishing pace. Yesterday’s anomaly will become tomorrow’s normal, which will continue to climb to hotter and more dangerous extremes. A look at monthly temperature records since 1970 reveals the high-risk, fast-changing cities where new monthly highs are being set at the highest velocity.

To determine the cities breaking temperature records at the highest velocity, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed county-level data on monthly temperature records from the NOAA. County seats were ranked based on the number of years since 1970 in which a new monthly high temperature was set in one of the 12 months throughout the year. Data on disaster risk is based on FEMA’s National Risk Index for Natural Hazards. Data is at the county level.
