While plenty of kids across the country wish for a white Christmas every year, those who want a snowy New Year’s Day may have better luck. January 1st is historically one of the snowiest days of the year, currently holding the record as the snowiest day of the year in 56 counties – ranking sixth out of all calendar days, just behind March 13th.

On January 1st, 1877, it snowed 15 inches in Cherokee County, North Carolina, setting a record for the county for one-day snowfall. Snowfall on New Year’s Day in 1964 set the record in 11 counties, ranging from 14 inches in Lowndes County, Mississippi, to 16 inches in Lawrence County, Tennessee. A look at NOAA data reveals the snowiest New Year’s Days in recorded history.

To determine the snowiest New Year’s Days ever, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on one-day snowfall totals from the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. Counties were ranked based on historic one-day snowfall for January 1. Only counties where New Year’s Day holds the current record for greatest one-day snowfall totals were included.
