January 1st is historically one of the snowiest days of the year, currently holding the record as the snowiest day of the year in 56 counties – ranking sixth out of all calendar days, just behind March 13th.

On January 1st, 1877, it snowed 15 inches in Cherokee County, North Carolina, setting a record for the county for one-day snowfall. Snowfall on New Year’s Day in 1964 set the record in 11 counties, ranging from 14 inches in Lowndes County, Mississippi, to 16 inches in Lawrence County, Tennessee. A look at NOAA data reveals the snowiest New Year’s Days in recorded history.
To determine the snowiest New Year’s Days ever, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on one-day snowfall totals from the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. Counties were ranked based on historic one-day snowfall for January 1. Only counties where New Year’s Day holds the current record for greatest one-day snowfall totals were included.
