In what has been one of the most destructive hurricane seasons in recent history, Hurricane Rafael became the 17th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season on November 4. While it is unclear whether the meandering Gulf storm will make landfall in the United States, if Rafael does touch down in the U.S. and stays a hurricane, it would join a short list of hurricanes that hit the U.S. in November.

Only 10 hurricanes Category One or higher have made landfall in the United States in November since at least 1851, when records begin. And while most hit outside the contiguous U.S., in Pacific territories like the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, several have made landfall in Atlantic states like North Carolina and Florida. A closer look at the data highlights the rare anomaly that is the November hurricane.

To determine the hurricanes that hit the United States in November, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on historical Atlantic and Pacific hurricane tracks going back to 1852 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Hurricanes with winds of at least 74 miles per hour – Category One on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale – at landfall were ranked based on maximum wind speed at landfall.
