Millions of Americans are currently bracing for a rare high-risk outbreak of tornadoes in the Midwest and South. According to the NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, multiple long-track EF3+ tornadoes are forecast to hit the mid-South, mid-Mississippi, and lower Ohio valleys over the next two days. The sudden storm system prompted the Storm Prediction Center to issue a rare, 5-out-of-5 high-risk severe weather outlook – a level of severity only issued about two to three times in an average year.

The National Weather Service has issued tornado watches stretching from Dallas to St. Louis, covering 126 counties and 6.6 million Americans. Satellite forecasts from the NOAA show a narrower storm path, with several major cities in the path of destruction. A closer look at the data reveals the major cities directly in the path of a tornado outbreak this week.

To determine the cities directly in the path of a tornado outbreak this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on tornado probability from the NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center. Cities were ranked based on the average probability of a tornado event occurring within 25 miles of their borders between April 2 and April 4, 2025. Only cities with at least 25,000 residents were included. Supplemental data on real estate value and population are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
