These Cities Could Get a Double Dose of Severe Weather This Week

Two weeks ago, a system of more than 30 tornadoes swept through the South and Midwest. Accompanied by hail and heavy precipitation, the storms left a trail of destruction from Texas to Ohio, causing millions in damages and at least 14 deaths.

While many of the hardest-hit towns are still recovering, with flooding forecast to last for weeks, another batch of thunderstorms and damaging winds are currently headed to the same region. An area of convection is currently developing from Nashville to Richmond, threatening wind gusts over 60 miles per hour and damaging hail. Over 200 cities have at least a 30% chance of tornado in the next 48 hours, covering about 400,000 people. While the National Weather Service has severe thunderstorm warnings to dozens of counties, a closer look at the data reveals the cities that could get hit with another tornado this week.

To determine the cities that could get a double dose of severe weather this week, Climate Crisis reviewed data on thunderstorm, tornado, and hail probability forecasts from the National Weather Service of the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the probability of experiencing thunderstorm winds, a tornado, or hail within 25 miles of their border from April 15 to April 16, 2025. Probabilities for individual severe weather phenomena were normalized and combined into one index score. Supplemental data on the total value of owner-occupied homes and population are from the U.S. Census Bureau. Only cities with at least 25,000 residents were considered.
