While the eastern United States is set to experience one last blast of winter weather this week, the Great Plains states are forecast to get an early start to summer. The subtropical jet, a jet stream located closer to the equator, will blow warm air from south of Hawaii to Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma, raising temperatures and contributing to a low pressure system that could bring on severe storms.

The miniature heat wave will bring 90-degree temperatures to a handful of cities for the first time this year, preceding historical weather patterns by weeks. In a majority of these cities, the first 90-degree day typically does not occur until mid to late June. In three Kansas cities, temperatures over the next 72 hours will break records set between 15 and 113 years ago. A closer look at the data reveals the cities that will experience unseasonably warm 90-degree days this week.

To determine the cities where the first 90-degree day of the year will occur, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on temperature forecasts and historical temperature observations from the NOAA. Cities that are set to experience their first 90-degree temperature maximum during the period April 16 to April 18 were ranked based on temperature maximum for the period. Forecast data is from the National Digital Forecast Database program, while historical daily temperatures for 2025 are from the National Centers for Environmental Information and are based on Global Historical Climatology Network weather stations. Only cities with at least 25,000 residents were considered.
