A moisture-packed storm system crawling across the Southeast is set to drench cities from Florida to the Carolinas through Tuesday, bringing the potential for flash flooding, damaging wind gusts, and even isolated tornadoes in some areas. Some cities could see two months worth of rain in just two days, with rainfall rates topping an inch per hour.

The storm has already soaked parts of the Mississippi Valley and is now expanding northward into major population centers. Dozens of cities are forecast to receive at least four inches of precipitation, affecting over 280,000 residents. While the heavy downpours may alleviate drought conditions in some parts of the Southeast, excessive precipitation also raises the risk of severe flooding in vulnerable areas. A closer look at the data reveals the cities set to get hammered by wind and rain this week.

To determine the cities most likely to get hammered by wind and rain this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on quantitative precipitation and thunderstorm wind probability forecasts from the National Weather Service of the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on total forecast cumulative rainfall for the period May 12 to May 14, 2025. Only cities with at least 40,000 residents and a non-zero chance of experiencing thunderstorm winds during the period were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
