Miami, Tampa Missing From Best Housing Markets

Miami and Tampa were, until recently, the meccas of Americans who wanted to live without a winter and state taxes. Florida was flooded with people who moved south. Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Jacksonville were bursting at the seams.
Hurricanes and a high cost of living has slowed the movement to Florida and made some people who live there to consider leaving. . Another problem for Florida residents was home insurance rates that rose with each new hurricane. For some people, insurance costs were higher than mortgage payments.
The Wall Street Journal recently put out its “The Summer 2025 Wall Street Journal/Realtor.com Housing Market Ranking.” Most of the ranking is based on home cost and unemployment. Every single city in the top 20 is either in the Northeast or Midwest.
Northern Cities
The top city is Manchester, NH which has an extremely low unemployment rate of 2.6%. The median home price is $599,900, which is about $100,000 above the national number. Notably, while the weather is temperate during the summer, it is cold during the winter, and, in some cases, very cold.
Second on the list is the relatively poor city of Canton OH. The unemployment rate there is 4.7% which is slightly above the national average. Home prices are well below that national number at $272,950.
Every city on the list is likely to have a cold winter.
Perhaps the list shows the start of a migration north.
