10 Automakers Losing Big in the EV Market in 2026

For much of the last year, electric vehicle makers have been fighting an uphill battle in the United States. Under a new policy implemented by the Trump administration, the $7,500 EV tax credit that was once available to qualified EV buyers expired at the end of September 2025, and in the nine months since, EV sales have collapsed. 

Domestic EV unit sales hit an all-time high of 437,487 in the third quarter of last year. Largely due to the elimination of federal tax credits, EV sales fell off a cliff in the final three months of 2025, plunging by nearly 50%. Now, half way through 2026, the EV segment still has yet to fully recover. 

According to a recent report from Cox Automotive, Americans bought about 463,000 EVs in the first two quarters of this year, a 23.7% decline from the first half of 2025. Much of the decline is likely due to the termination of financial incentives, which has reduced consumer demand, and in turn, caused many automakers to pull certain models out of the U.S. market. 

While some automakers, like Subaru and Toyota, have managed to overcome market headwinds – often through the introduction of new models – most brands in the EV segment have seen staggering year-over-year sales declines. Many of these same brands have recently discontinued or paused production of certain models in their EV lineup. 

Using data from the 2026 Q2 Electric Vehicle Sales Report from Cox Automotive, Climate Crisis 247 identified the automakers with the largest year-over-year sales declines so far in 2026. We ranked all EV brands on the relative change in sales volume between the first half of 2025 and the first half of 2026. Only the 10 EV brands with the greatest decrease in unit sales are listed. Data on base MSRP by nameplate is from Car and Driver, an auto industry publication. All other supplemental data is from Cox Automotive. 

10. Porsche
