10 U.S. Counties With gas prices near or at $7 Per gallon
The U.S. and Israeli military campaign in Iran continues to take a toll on American consumers. Since the war began in late February 2026, Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical supply route for approximately 20% of the world’s oil – and the supply shock has sent gasoline prices soaring to historic highs.
The economic consequences of the war have not been limited to the pump. Due largely to rising transportation costs, the consumer price index hit a nearly 3 year high of 3.8% in April 2026. As the war drags on and negotiations remain at an apparent standstill, the Trump administration is exploring options to ease financial pressures on American households.
Earlier this month, President Trump proposed a temporary federal gas tax suspension, a move that would require congressional approval. Even if implemented, however, the suspension’s impact would be negligible as the federal government taxes gasoline at a rate of 18 cents per gallon, and since late February, gas prices have climbed by over $1.50 per gallon. Additionally, to help reduce supply shocks, the Trump administration has committed to release 172 million barrels of oil from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Last week, record-high 1.22 million barrels were released from the reserve each day. But over roughly the same period, prices at the pump fell by only 2 cents.
According to research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, higher gas prices are disproportionately impacting low-income Americans. But regional variations in gas prices also mean some Americans are shouldering a greater burden than others – particularly in places where a gallon of gas is now selling for over $6.
Using data from AAA, Climate Crisis 247 identified the U.S. counties with the highest gas prices. We ranked all U.S. counties on the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline as of May 13, 2026. Supplemental population data are five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey.
