AI Will Replace The Weatherman
AI wants to take over the weather forecasting business. It is getting close but is not there yet. According to Axios, it works with current physics-based models.
Today’s Climate News –Olympics And Dirty River
The weather forecasting industry generates $1.6 billion in revenue today, forecast to reach $3 billion by 2027. Presumably, some of the increase is due to climate change, which is causing more potential and real climate disasters. AI forecasts could save lives.
Old Model Vs. New Model
Axios reports that the AI plus physics model is more accurate than AI alone. Part of the reason is that there is so little experience with “AI-only” that it is hard to measure against more traditional technology. Axios also reports that Nvidia has an AI product that does not require using previously developed tech at all.
As with most AI applications, there are two open questions. The first is how quickly they improve on current technology. The other is what they cost, which has to include the cost of energy they require, which at this point is massive. AI weather energy use could create a climate crisis of its own.
Odds are the AI won’t completely replace current weather tech anytime soon. If the promise of AI is accurate in most cases, that won’t be permanent.
