Bill Gates Says Climate Money Is Wasted
Bill Gates, former Microsoft CEO and billionaire, sent a memo to anyone who would read it. It is titled “Three tough truths about climate: What I want everyone at COP30 to know.”
What stands out in the memo is not the dangers of global warming, which are a part of anyone who thinks climate change is badly damaging the world. Money spent on climate change is wasted in the wrong places. “Is the money designated for climate being spent on the right things? I believe the answer is no.”
Gates argues that climate change is one of three factors that negatively affect the human condition. The others are disease and poverty. Putting all the money into one of the three baskets is unwise.
Quality Of Life
One of his arguments is that money spent on the climate may take years to be effective. Many of these are new-stage technologies, including new forms of nuclear energy. Some will not be online for several years.
Gates also believes it is a poor practice to look back on earlier efforts to slow climate change and call them inadequate. Much of the work done today is built on their shoulders. This includes, particularly, work on wind and solar, both of which have been hurt by the Trump Administration
Gates also believes that to attack the global emissions problem, one must look at five problems. These are the emissions from manufacturing, agriculture, transportation, buildings, and electricity. Each has to be approached differently and with different resources.
Gates also thinks it is poor practice to make temperatures the yardstick for measuring climate progress. Quality of life and health are better measurements.
Gates wants to set similar goals for climate change, but thinks the paths to achieving them are largely inefficient.
