Can The Weather Service Help Relieve Hunger?

Among the primary causes of hunger is the weather that destroys crops. Certainly, sudden weather events, such as flooding and hurricanes, fall into this category. One partial solution is better weather forecasting and communications systems, which in some parts of the world are inadequate or nonexistent.
Chatham House has released a study titled “How to bolster food security through global early-warning systems.” The primary conclusion of the work is that “Early-warning systems that anticipate multiple and cascading risks can reduce food insecurity and build greater resilience.”
How Much Does It Cost?
The challenge with these projects is that most third world countries, where food insecurity is most likely, do not have the capital available to build complex systems that can be used over thousands or tens of thousands of miles.
Nations with the worst food security are primarily located in Africa; the geographic size of some countries in this region is among the largest in the world. Afghanistan and Pakistan are also on the list.Â
As is often the case with the worst and most intransigent hunger problems, the primary path to the solution is capital availability.
