Climate Crisis Will Cause Millions Of Americans To Move
It may be extreme heat, drought, or hurricanes. While several scientists and climate experts have made this point, researchers at Columbia have made it the most powerful.

in a paper titled, “America’s Great Climate Migration Has Begun. Here’s What You Need to Know.” “We’ll likely see population shifts in the US in the coming decades because of climate change,” says de Sherbinin, who directs the Columbia Climate School’s Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN)
The researchers said this number is expected to rise into the millions by the end of this century. They quickly made the point that some of the decisions to move will be subjective. Some people who live in areas where the climate has become hazardous on occasion might take the risk of staying where they live.
Why People Will Move
Some decisions will be made on a more “objective” basis. Most of these will involve health and well-being, or danger that property damage could be extreme enough to affect their finances. Another factor is whether the government takes any measures to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change in certain parts of the country.
Most climate experts already know the areas people are likely to leave. Some are on the coasts and have places where people live that are partially below sea level. The New Orleans metro area is among these. Other regions plagued by drought will find that water is becoming increasingly scarce for cities to provide, and wells are no longer a reliable source of water.
People will start to move.
