Climate Advocates Turn To Sabotage

Life Matters

Climate activists are tired of being ignored. They write op-ed prices, send letters to company directors and congressmen, and protest in the streets. They even sued oil companies for damage they did to the environment years ago. To get attention, some have turned to sabotage.

According to The Guardian, “Now, with climate breakdown worsening and fossil fuel emissions showing no signs of peaking, let alone abating, some say it is time to escalate the campaign of disruption by carrying out clandestine acts of sabotage against the corporations they see as responsible for the destruction of the climate.” These people are not chaining themselves to fences to block vehicles from entering nuclear power plants. The “acts” could be much more dangerous.

Climate Activists

This activity makes sense to the extent that climate activists are being attacked physically for their protests.

According to the University of Bristol, “The criminalization and repression of climate and environmental protest is problematic. It focuses state policy on punishing dissent against inaction on climate and environmental change instead of taking adequate action. In criminalizing and repressing climate and environmental activists, states depoliticize them.”

Many activities that protest the lack of action on climate change are not willing to take the non-violence path.
