The NOAA’s Climate.gov website will be shut down and most of its staff will be fired. The NOAA is the federal government department that houses the National Weather Service. The Guardian broke the story.

Climate.gov is primarily a portal for public education and administration. The paper reported The climate.gov site was housed within the communication, education, and engagement division of Noaa, which describes itself as “the largest team in the federal government dedicated to climate communication, education, and engagement”.

Major Source Of Data

The site receives hundreds of thousands of visits per day.

The National Weather Service has already fired about 600 employees. The Washington Post reported that some Weather Service offices are no longer open 24 hours a day. There is deep concern that during the Atlantic Hurricane Season, staff will be inadequate to properly track the storms, which will endanger lives and billions of dollars of property. This year is forecast to be among the worst hurricane seasons on record.

The decision, along with numerous changes by the federal government, is poised to alter the U.S. policy climate significantly. Among the other are cuts to offshore wind permits and the elimination of regulations that limit pollution from large factories and mines
