“Doom Loops” Hit Global Climate

Climate change leads to violent weather, which has political consequences. Political decisions can worsen climate change, creating a “doom loop.”
The IEA describes one of these, based on what has become a political race for rising energy needs. “Even demand in advanced economies is rising again after years of declines, with rapid growth of electricity worldwide driving up consumption of renewables, gas, coal and nuclear.” The fact that “coal” is in the sentence has caused anxiety among climate analysts. Coal’s decades as a primary source of electricity generation were supposed to be over.
AI Against The Environment
The issue becomes more critical: improving the environment or advancing artificial intelligence. Either answer could have horrible consequences. AI may be the most important technological advance in history.
For several years, it appeared that renewables would be able to supply enough energy to ensure the sunset of coal. But, a new advance in tech and the economy changed that almost overnight.
The “doom loop” is not just a clever phase. It may be the future of climate change.
