Global Warming Drops Behind Crime And Corruption Concerns

A new Climate Change in the American Mind (CCAM) survey shows that global warming is well behind other concerns of the US public. It ranks behind “treatment of immigrants” and “crime.” It shows there remains an uphill climb to raise public awareness about greenhouse gas emissions and the hazardous conditions produced by climate change, which include violent weather.

The poll was done between May 1 and May 12. Just over 1,000 people were surveyed

The top concern among those questioned was “government corruption,” with 54% indicating they were very worried. This was followed by “cost of living” at 48%, “the economy” at 47%, and “state of democracy” and “disruption of federal government services” which were both at 44%.

“Global warming” ranked eighth at 29%, just ahead of “crime” at 26%.

A Government Retreat

There is a reason for the results to cause alarm. The federal government and many large companies are retreating from climate goals. The Trump Administration has almost completely abandoned them. Large tech companies that made board promises about achieving net-zero goals are now backing away from those commitments as the energy needs of AI data centers increase.

And, the largest fossil fuel companies have become emboldened. Their management says that oil is essential, which is proven by brisk demand. As the need for electricity has signaled a return to coal.

It may be that the public’s concern about global warming peaked some time in the past.
