It’s -112 Degrees In The Coldest Place In The World Today
It’s -112 degrees F in both Dome Fuji and Dome Argus. The site is located on the East Antarctic Plateau, which is the part of the continent closest to Australia.
One of the regions where the two areas are among the coldest places in the world is that they are located at an elevation of 12,500 feet above sea level. That is over half the height of Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in the US.
Each of the locations is used for research. This includes astronomy, climatology, ice drilling, and geophysics.
No People In Winter
The two locations rarely have more than two dozen residents. In the winter, they are usually not manned at all.
The area has had extreme heat periods, which are highly unusual. According to The Washington Post last year, “Ground temperatures in East Antarctica have soared more than 50 degrees (28 Celsius) above normal in the second major heat wave to afflict the region in the past two years.”
