Lies About Climate Disaster Could Be Blocked By AI
A study titled “Artificial Intelligence Tools in Misinformation Management during Natural Disasters” shows that AI can spot lies and misinformation in natural disasters, some of which are related to climate change.
The core of the paper’s conclusion is that “Recognizing the detrimental impact of misinformation, previous research has explored various strategies for its detection and mitigation. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have emerged as promising tools in this regard, offering advanced capabilities for real-time analysis and intervention. Specifically, AI technologies such as natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms have shown significant potential in identifying and countering false information.”

Some of the challenges of this problem trace their way back to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, active climate change-deniers have used the press, and more often, social media. Facebook has over 2.1 billion active users, making it a huge platform for spreading lies.
The study covered 2,000 people and used ChatGPT. AI was able to pick up 97% of the false information, which was correctly programmed.
Among the platforms examined was China’s TikTok. There have been worries that China uses it to spread disinformation in the US.
