Many Americans Distrust Climate Change Claims
A new poll by I&I/TIPP Poll data shows that “a significant portion of Americans remains deeply skeptical about climate change.” The poll, which included 1,478 adults, was taken between Jan. 29 and 31. The results were shocking and could influence policy and America’s green economy.
“About half of those surveyed said they completely (20%) or somewhat (30%) trust climate change claims, while 36% expressed distrust — 20% completely and 16% somewhat,” the authors wrote. About 70% say there are valid reasons to question climate change policy. About 30% do not believe the information used to set past public policies should be trusted.
Difference Between Political Parties
Sixty-seven percent of Democrats trust claims about the negative effects of climate change. Only 37% of Republicans fall into this category.
The new policies of President Trump may have helped shape these opinions.
What is at stake is whether the government and private sector will continue to invest in programs to arrest climate change. The US is the second largest contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions after China.
Federal Government Investment
Without federal government investment, lowering emissions is impossible. The private sector does not have the capital, or the ability to approve green energy or projects that use public land.
If the move toward skepticism accelerates, the US commitment to green energy and green policies could begin to disappear.
