New Jersey is the state worst prepared for climate changes and extreme weather. The ranking is based on data collected by CNBC. In some categories, like heat, it does much better. It is over 110 degrees in Las Vegas and Phoenix.
Cold Is An Issue, Too –Extreme Cold Near The South Pole
The TV channel looked at data from its own “Top States for Business,” NOAA data, information for the Department of Energy, and proprietary data from First Street. According to Jeremy Porter, head of climate implications for First Street Foundation, a primary conclusion was, “There’s really no place in the country that doesn’t have risk.”
New Jersey performs poorly across all the major CNBC metrics—2024 Infrastructure Score: 179 out of 425 points (Top States Grade: D+), Climate Extremes Index: 48.6%, Properties at Risk: 100%, and Renewable Energy: 6%.
Will Future Heat Be An Issue?
Regarding future problems, CNBC’s reporters wrote, “Warmer temperatures are creating more intense storms, causing sea levels to rise, threatening public health, and damaging the state’s aging infrastructure.”
The study needs to be revised in the future because data from sources like NOAA and the Department of Energy are gross measures of weather events and forecasts. This makes them poor metrics for how a state will be affected by weather or other climate change events. Using slightly different measures, if events like storms, temperature, and drought received more weight, it would fall ahead of states like Florida, Texas, and Nevada. Hurricane season is expected to bring massive storms to areas that include Florida.
