Over 600,000 Without Water Due To Drought In Cuba
Cuba has barely 11 million people, and at least 600,000 are without drinking water. A great many of these are in Havana, and by some estimates, the number is much higher.
According to local paper El Pais, The water crisis in Cuba did not begin yesterday, but the deterioration of the country , the impossibility of maintaining the pipelines and the shortage of fuel have clearly exacerbated the problem, since the hydraulic sector is the second largest consumer of electricity in the country (Google Translate). This infrastructure will not be repaired because of lack of capital and the necessary components.
Russia And China
The reason for the problem is partially economic. Semafor reports,Russia, China, and Venezuela have been major investors in Cuba, but much of this support has been withdrawn.
Mexico City
While the situation is not exactly like that of Mexico City which has been short on water for months, and may eventually run out, each does suffer from an aging infrastructure and lack of capital to make upgrades which would cost billions of dollars.
Another common aspect of the Mexico and Cuba disasters is that those who suffer from the water shortages have nowhere to go. There is no housing or work for so many people outside these regions, and there is no means for transportation or housing. The poor, in particular, are trapped. And it may sometimes turn to violence.
