China’s BYD Accused Of Human Trafficking

China’s BYD, the largest EV company in the world, is facing more trouble with its global expansion. It has been accused of human trafficking.

According to Reuters, .”Chinese workers at a construction site in Brazil for a factory owned by China’s electric vehicle producer BYD are victims of human trafficking, Brazilian labor authorities said on Thursday in a growing controversy in BYD’s biggest overseas market.”

BYD plans to expand into Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. However, these accusations, if found to be true, could curtail that expansion. Almost all of its current sales are inside China. And it is boxed out of the US and EU by tariffs.

Likely, other car companies that want to slow BYD’s global growth will use this news as leverage, perhaps with local governments.

Low Cost Provider

BYD is a low-cost provider of EVs, which means it has several models that sell for under $25,000. The average EV price in the US is $55,000. Price is considered a major hurdle to EV sales, charging time, and range.

BYD and Jinjiang, the Chinese company’s manufacturing partner, denied the charges
