Places Where Freezing Temperatures Shattered All-Time Records in 2025
Since the Industrial Revolution ushered in the era of climate change, temperatures around the world have been steadily rising – and in recent years, the pace of warming has accelerated. In 2024, the mean surface temperature globally was 1.55°C above the 1850-1900 average, making it the warmest year on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization. Additionally, each year from 2015 through 2024 now ranks among the 10 hottest years on record.
The ongoing warming trend is evidenced around the world, not only through longer and hotter summers, but also in shorter winters and fewer extreme cold events. However, while severe cold may be less common in parts of the world today than it was even a few decades ago, incidents of extreme cold – such as the polar vortex that swept over the Midwestern and Northeastern U.S. in early December 2025 – do not appear to be weakening in intensity.
In the United States, the seeming paradox of a warming climate and intermittent periods of extreme cold is on full display. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the average temperature in the continental U.S. between January and November 2025 was 56.2°F, the fifth highest 11-month average of any year since at least 1895. Still, even though this year will likely soon go down as one of the warmest ever, there are several parts of the country where the mercury hit new, all-time lows in 2025.
Using data from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, Climate Crisis 247 identified the places where frigid temperatures shattered historic records in 2025. We reviewed data on all-time record lows reported across tens of thousands of weather stations in the United States, and identified those in which new record lows were set in 2025. Only weather stations where new historic lows were below zero or in the single-digits were considered. For context, we also included the lowest temperature ever recorded at the broader state level, as reported by NOAA’s State Climate Extremes Committee. Supplemental data on the elevation and location of the weather stations on this list are also from NOAA.
From the beginning of January through mid-December 2025, 13 weather stations across the U.S. reported record-breaking single digit or sub-zero temperatures. Notably, some of these weather stations have been in operation longer than others. For example, the Slidell Airport Weather Station in Tammany Parish, Louisiana began operating in 1988 – and the record low of 8°F reported there on Jan. 22, 2025 replaced the previous record of 15°F that was set in 1996. Other weather stations on this list, however, are far older and historic lows reported this year beat records that had stood for well over a century.
While the 2025 temperatures on this list are the lowest ever at the local level, they remain well above the all-time lows reported statewide. The Dickinson Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport in Stark County, North Dakota, where temperatures dropped to a historic low of -36°F on Feb. 18, 2025, is one of five weather stations in the state to rank on this list. Across all of North Dakota, however, the lowest temperature ever recorded was -60°F, in the city of Parshall on Feb. 15, 1936.
