New policies implemented during the second Trump term have created multiple obstacles for the EV industry in the United States. Most notably, in October 2025, the Trump administration repealed the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit, eliminating a $7,500 federal subsidy for qualified EV buyers. The effects were immediate and pronounced, as EV unit sales plummeted by nearly 50% from Q3 to Q4 last year. Additionally, throughout much of 2025, the administration froze access to billions of dollars that had been earmarked for public EV charging infrastructure.

But now, more than a year since the expiration of federal EV tax incentives, the EV segment is beginning to regain momentum. Consumer demand for EVs has grown each quarter in 2026, and the latest quarterly data shows unit sales topping 250,000 for the first time in a year. Additionally, the Tesla Model Y ranks among the five best-selling vehicles in the U.S. so far in 2026.

But while consumer demand may be making a comeback, setbacks in installation of charging infrastructure may be creating problems for EV owners. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there were more than 262,000 public charging ports across the 50 states in 2025, or about one charging port for every 28 registered electric vehicles that year. In certain states, however, EV demand has greatly outpaced infrastructure buildout.

Using data from the Department of Energy, Climate Crisis 247 identified the states where EV sales are outrunning charging infrastructure. We ranked all 50 states on the number of registered EVs per public charging port. Only the 10 states with the worst charger-to-EV ratios are listed. Supplemental data for the EV model(s) that rank among the best selling vehicles across all segments by state are from Edmunds.
