The Dirtiest Car In America

As the car market continues to have a larger and larger number of EVs and hybrid models, some American vehicles continue to have MPG figures below 15. These are air pollution machines, and a new study names them.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) released its Greener Car list for this year. The data to create the list came from fuel economy and emissions reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, along with information from the car companies. The study looked at emissions from tailpipes and engines and data on fine particles, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons. Vehicles were given scores from 0 to 100.

The Toyota Prius Prime SE PHEV had the best score among all vehicles measured at 71. Its MSRP was $32,975, well below the average price of a new car in America, about $40,000. Its annual fuel cost was $529.

Mercedes-Benz

The least green car, which the ACEEE called the “meanest car,” was the Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 with an MSRP of $184,00. Its average annual fuel cost was $4,242. The AMG G63 is a massive SUV built by Mercedes AMG performance car division. It has a potent 4-liter, 8-cylinder biturbo engine. It weighs over 7,000 pounds.

Most vehicles on the least green list are performance models of SUVs and pickups. These include the performance models of America’s top-selling vehicles–the F-150 and RAM 1500.

The vehicles on the dirty car list prove that some American drivers don’t care about the environment.
