There’s Plastic In Your Glass Bottle

One of the assumptions about scientists who study the spread of microplastics and nanoplastics is that they are common in plastic bottles and containers used by humans. These plastics enter the human bloodstream and migrate dangerously to the heart and brain, posing a significant health risk. It has also been assumed that their presence in glass bottles is low because glass does not contain plastic in any way. The assumption was wrong.

Glass bottles used by humans contain a fair amount of plastic, according to new research. Experts wrote their conclusions in Medscape in an article titled ‘Glass Bottles Won’t Save You From Microplastics.’

Stomach Cancer

Among the conclusions was that after examining plastic bottles and their levels of microplastics, “Most surprising is that beverages in glass bottles contained higher levels of microplastics than those in plastic bottles or cans. The research suggests that this contamination comes from cap abrasion during storage.”

The researchers went on to explain that the health concerns were higher than had been previously reported. Plastics, among other problems, could cause stomach cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. Their solution was to get glass bottle manufacturers to use caps that do not contain plastic.

The spread of plastics throughout the world’s ecosystem is staggering. It has been found thousands of feet below the ocean’s surface and in rain. They are also airborne in soil.

One challenge is that the plastics problem is almost impossible to solve. Some plastics do not break down for centuries.
