Inside Climate News has analyzed how climate change could negatively affect U.S. national security and the military. Some of the items noted have been on lists of threats for years.

The Center for Climate & Security: Council on Strategic Risks has a “Military Response to Climate Hazards Tracker.” It consists of an interactive map and data sets. “This includes all hazard types that climate change is known to make more likely or intense–such as heatwaves, flooding, drought, extreme precipitation, and storms and hurricanes–even if a scientific study has not yet quantified the role of climate change in a particular incident.”

Hurricanes And Heat

The Inside Climate News analysis shows that the U.S. The Intelligence Community has dropped any reference to climate change risk to the military. “Military generals have long known that weather can win or lose wars, including some of the battles that established America itself.”

Suppose the Defense Department turns its back on this. In that case, it risks the threat of flooded military runways, no plans to secure part of the Arctic as the area is melted enough so it allows warship passage without using the Panama or Suez Canals, or 110 degree F heat that can last for days.

It’s a real threat, and the military appears to have dropped it as a priority.
