US Food Waste Hits 183 Billion Pounds

Food waste accounts for about 35% of all food produced in the US. Worldwide, it accounts for approximately 10% of global emissions, which is comparable to the combined effects of all transportation and shipping. The definition is food prepared by not eaten. 

The US is more likely to waste food than any other nation in the world. The EPA reports, “More than 85 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from landfilled food waste result from activities prior to disposal, including production, transport, processing, and distribution.”

Waste Solutions?

The U.S. government’s goal is to reduce waste levels by half by 2020. However, the USDA lacks the necessary authority to implement this. That goal was set in 2015, and there is no evidence that the government has made any progress toward that goal in the last decade

More Education

Recycling and “education” are listed as the two primary paths forward to cutting waste. There are, however, no systems in place to do this or to train the broad population on how they can be done.
