Bucks County is the latest city, country, or state to sue fossil fuel companies for the damage they have done to the environment. Damage from flooding last July is the reason. Inside Climate News reports, “The 2023 storm is described in a new civil lawsuit filed by Bucks County against several oil and gas companies, including BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil and Shell, and the American Petroleum Institute.” Climatecrisis247 believes that these suit facts constitute a significant challenge. They have been compared to the suits against Big Tobacco, which netted tens of billions of dollars in payouts. However, the link between smoking and diseases, as well as a coverup of their discoveries about the relationship between smoking and health outcomes, was almost certainly easier to prove.

One of the most famous Senators of the second half of the 20th Century warned about the effects of carbon dioxide in 1969. According to the PBS program “American Masters,” Daniel Patrick Moynihan said that the problem would eventually become one of interest to the broad public. Climatecrisis247 believes this is more evidence the harmful effects of climate change were already evident to a small number of scientists and people who understood the science as early as 60 or 70 years ago.

Does War Push Climate Issues Out Of The Press?

Are world events, including war and the threat of war, lowering the public’s interest in and concern about the climate crisis? News company Aljazeera believes so. “There are fears that wars in Gaza and Ukraine may deflect attention from the climate crisis.” Further, daily events push climate change off the front pages of newspapers and news sites. Climatecrisis247 believes that, while this observation may be accurate, it is only modestly so. Climate change coverage continues to be a dominant issue for the press, and many successful niche sites cover it.

Biden Investors Hundreds Of Billions In Climate Change Efforts

The Biden Administration has spent vast sums of money on environmental programs across all of America’s states, even those likely to be carried by Donald Trump in the presidential election. According to Axios, these sums add to hundreds of billions of dollars. What’s next? “Biden is starting to dole out grants and loans from his third signature bill, the Chips and Science Act — which includes $39 billion in grants, plus loans and loan guarantees valued at $75 billion.” Climatecrisis247 believes it may be hard for voters to see how this directly affects them. The money goes to hundreds of programs, which voters are unlikely to be able to track. The positive results of these programs on the environment may also be lost on voters.
