In advance of COP29, the agreement to slow global warming appears in deep trouble. President-elect Donald Trump is ready to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, which is at the heart of the world’s effort to recover from the brink of disaster. China and India attend the meetings and have been part of several pledges to slow greenhouse gases, but not much has come from those promises.

Sustainability for All recently released a report titled The Top Five Most Polluting Companies. Rankings were based on carbon dioxide emissions. China ranked first with 30% of the world’s total, followed by the US at 15% and China at 7%. The authors pointed out that “Emissions of greenhouse gases of human origin are the main cause of climate change. Their effects on global warming are devastating and it is becoming more and more urgent that these emissions are reduced to stop humans from exercising so much pressure on the planet. The situation is so critical that the International Energy Agency (IEA) has forecast an increase in emissions of 130% by 2050 if we continue unabated.”

Curtail Emissions
Not only are the largest polluters not making an effort to curtail their emissions, but the money they were to provide to the world’s underdeveloped nations has been well below plan. Without outside capital, these countries can do nothing to help lower global emissions.

Both rich and poor nations throttled back on their plans. The reason could be money. In the largest polluting nations, regulations could hamstring some businesses, particularly damaging India’s GDP growth.
