Is COP29 Kaput? Azerbaijan Climate Confab Unlikely to Dodge Big Oil’s Clout

As COP29 approaches in Baku, Azerbaijan, Climate Crisis editor Doug McIntyre and David Callaway discuss the challenges facing this year’s United Nations Climate Summit. Expected attendance is lower than in previous years, with only around 35,000 attendees anticipated, partly due to the U.S. election’s uncertain outcome and the rising influence of oil companies in COP discussions. Callaway explains that oil representatives, initially observers, now actively participate, especially with COP conferences held in oil-centric locations like Dubai and Azerbaijan.
