The climate change effect: Why Syracuse, NY, is World’s Snowiest City
Syracuse, New York, has earned the title of the snowiest large city in the world, with average annual snowfall levels unmatched anywhere. Doug McIntyre, editor-in-chief of Climate Crisis, explains how Syracuse’s location near Lake Erie drives this extreme weather through a process called “lake effect” snow. As climate change-created warmer air crosses Lake Erie, water vapor is lifted into the clouds, and when this air mass reaches the colder areas around Syracuse, the vapor condenses and falls as snow, sometimes reaching two to three feet in a single day.
