What Would Happen if a Category 5 Hurricane hit Miami?
Doug McIntyre of Climate Crisis 247 emphasizes Miami’s vulnerability to such hurricanes due to its location. While newer buildings might withstand the 157 mph winds, many of Miami’s older structures would not. The major threat, however, is the storm surge, which can reach 19 feet, flooding significant parts of the city below sea level. A Category 5 hurricane hitting Miami would be catastrophic.
