Coca-Cola Is The World’s Worst Plastic Polluter

A new study, “Global producer responsibility for plastic pollution,” used brand names to hold companies “accountable” for their actions. The study covered data from 2018 to 2022. It also covered 84 nations and was based on 1,576 environment audits. The researchers made the point that their study could not be comprehensive. “We found that 50% of items were unbranded, calling for mandated producer reporting.”

Another Danger –Will Fossil Fuels Go Away?

Coca-Cola topped the list at 11% of brands on plastic items identified by the audits. PepsiCo was second at 5%, followed by Nestle at 2%, Danone at 3%, and tobacco company Atria at 2%.

Plastics are currently found in virtually every part of the environment, from the air to the deepest parts of the oceans.

Can The Problem Be Fixed?

The authors make at least one unrealistic comment. “Exponential growth in production, consumption, or profit is eventually unsustainable, and degrowth is the solution to overgrowth.” The companies have no incentive to slow their activity, and so far, there is no effective legislation to make them do so.

Several studies have tried to pinpoint the health effects of plastic in the environment, although none are conclusive. A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine stated plastics in the human body could cause heart attacks or strokes.
