Nvidia Moves Into Weather Forecasting

According to Axios, Nvidia is entering the weather forecast business. The site reports, “Nvidia claims CoreDiff is 500 times faster and up to 10,000 times more energy-efficient than traditional high-resolution weather prediction models.” Corediff is one of Nvidia’s analytics models.
Traditional Forecasts
Traditional weather forecast methods have depended on computer-based physics models for several decades.
Google has made similar claims only for short-term forecasts. The search company’s AI weather product is known as GraphCast. “GraphCast predicts weather conditions up to 10 days in advance more accurately and much faster than the industry gold-standard weather simulation system – the High Resolution Forecast (HRES), produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).< Google claims.
AI Weather Revolution
A revolution in weather forecasting may solve the problem of predicting the patterns of violent storms. As recently as the last hurricane season, the production for where Hurricane Milton would come ashore on the West Coast of Florida was off by at least 30 miles a day before it made landfall.
World’s Most Powerful Storms
As storms become more frequent and powerful worldwide due to climate change, exact forecasts could save hundreds of lives and billions of dollars in property damage.
If the Nvidia product is much better than the Google one, the AI weather prediction race has sped up.
