First ‘Disturbance’ of 2025 to Bring Heavy Rain to Florida, Carolinas

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season began on Sunday, and some parts of the country are already feeling its effects. As of Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center is tracking a weak low-pressure system off the southeastern coast identified as “Disturbance 1.” While the chances of the disturbance developing into a named tropical cyclone are below 10%, the system is poised to deliver heavy rainfall up and down the Atlantic coast.

NOAA forecast data show that cities from Miami to Charleston could experience several inches of rain over the next 72 hours. Nationwide, there are 188 counties expecting at least two inches of precipitation, representing over 16 million Americans. The NWS has issued flood warnings in 48 counties, and flood watches in 244 counties. A closer look at the data reveals where the first hurricane disturbance of 2025 could bring heavy rains this week.
To determine the cities forecast to receive the most rain this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on quantitative precipitation forecasts from the National Weather Service of the NOAA. Cities on the Atlantic coast were ranked based on total forecast cumulative rainfall for the period June 4 to June 6, 2025. Only cities with at least 50,000 residents were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
