As what experts term “flash flood month” continues, several impending storm systems are raising flood risk in large swaths of the country. More than 200 counties are forecast to receive at least one inch of rain in the next 72 hours, many in dry, drought-stricken places where non-absorbent soil could cause torrents of rain to quickly turn into floodwaters. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for 187 counties, representing more than 10 million Americans. A closer look at the data reveals the cities with the greatest flood risk this week.
To determine the cities with the greatest flood risk this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on flood watches from the National Weather Service and rain forecasts from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database. Cities under flood watch as of July 21, 2025 were ranked based on forecast cumulative rainfall for the period July 22 to July 24, 2025. Only cities with at least 10,000 residents were considered.
