Weather Service Has 122 Offices, Some Will Close

The National Weather Service says it has 4,900 workers in 122 weather forecasting offices. That number, at its website. It may be wrong. Enough people in the organization may have been fired so that they cannot keep the count up to date
The Washington Post reports that some of these offices are not occupied 24 hours a day. This may be because of job openings. Some estimates of layoffs at NOAA, the Weather Service parent, are as high as 20%. However, some of those may be probationary workers.
It is too early to say what the cutbacks mean. Some are worried that the Weather Service will do more poorly at forecasting and tracking dangerous weather. That depends on who was, or is, laid off. There is also a theory that AI-based forecasts are better than any available now. There is no proof of that.Â
Worse Forecasts
The effects of almost all government layoffs is hard to forecast. Some parts of the government may have too many people. But the layoffs have been so quick, so random, and so large in many cases, it will become impossible to know.
What is likely to be the case is that, as NOAA cuts thousands of workers, not every one of the 122 weather service offices will survive.
